Kennel News

22nd February 2021

As we approach the end of February, we are all hopeful that better times will return and we can get some sort of normality back into the kennels, and of course our family life!

As a charity branch, we have been very well supported and guided by the welfare team at head office. We have been kept updated with Defra guidelines and working practises. The kennel team have followed these closely and guided the volunteers, who have been able to support the greyhounds with the new way of doing everything.

We have therefore been able to take dogs from Monmore trainers when we have secured vet space for neutering. We have also been delighted to help with internal transfer of greyhounds from other branches across the country. The racing authority in Ireland, the IGB has begun to work closely with our charity to move greyhounds over here to find their family. These are all neutered, vaccinated and assessed, so we are able to match them to waiting families briskly once we have completed our own assessments.

All public interaction at the kennels is now strictly by appointment and this is working very well for everyone and keeping everyone safe and distanced. Nail clipping and use of the field for free galloping continues to help with financial donations whilst we cannot get out and about doing awareness events. We take appointments by telephone , 01902 291080,  for slots between 10am and 2pm every day.

The hounds have been lucky to get a constant stream of surprise financial donations through the post, dry and tinned dog food and of course, we have lots of regular contributions through the supported hound scheme. (details of which can be found on our website)

We keep in touch with our branch volunteers on a regular basis via email and of course with those who choose to come along to help the kennel hounds during the week. They have meant the routines continue as usual, including hugely important socialisation between racing and family life. This includes trips out in the van to local parks to meet other dogs, and walks around our field with different people on different days.

A special mention to volunteer Gary. He arrives on a Sunday morning with his tool box and has fixed fencing, drain pipes, running kennel repairs and anything else we held help with. We are very grateful and it shows volunteers help the hounds in many ways.

Stay safe and well folks.
