Welcome to the second Branch News in it’s new monthly format and we hope that you enjoy reading it.
News from the Kennels.
July saw twelve of the greyhounds in are care leaving us for their new loving homes and we are pleased to say they have all settled well into their new life. This brings the total of hounds leaving us this year to one hundred and two.
The hot weather has been a concern for the welfare of our hounds as the majority of our hounds have black coats which attracts the heat. We have limited the time they have spent out of their cooler kennels, but our volunteers have walked them in the field as usual, making sure that this was done in the tree shaded areas.
July saw a bit of juggling with the kennel team daily working rota due to holidays and jury service. Absence was not only covered by our bank staff member Lynn, but also by one of our dedicated volunteers Judy, who came in early to help with the paddocking and cleaning.
We still had potential ‘homers’ visiting the kennels during the month, but several had upcoming holidays, so will be either returning at a later date or taking their chosen hound in early August
The better weather meant that we saw many of our homed hounds at sponsor weekend for nail clipping. Last month you may remember the weather was not that kind, so many of the hounds received a two month pedicure.
Roadshows and Awareness Events.
July proved to be a quiet month by Roadshow usual standards, July is usually the carnival season but this year Bloxwich decided not to hold its annual carnival.
The Roadshow went to Great Wyrley Carnival which was successful with lots of people showing interest in the hounds on a very hot Saturday. The extremely high temperatures at Pelsall Carnival meant that animal events were cancelled on the advice of the RSPCA. The next event planned for the Clargate pub didn’t take place because of the high winds and heavy rain.
Volunteers are working on the four day event at Blenheim Country File Live at the start of August. August is usually a fairly quiet month with people on holiday. Events start again at the beginning of September with Roadshow at Wolverhampton town centre and Warley Woods Dog Day.
July Care Home Visit
Our regular monthly visit to New Cross care home took place on a very hot Friday 13th July, which actually turned out to be rather a lucky day for our two lovely hounds who as usual were great ambassadors for the breed, and for the residents who, as usual, were excited to get to meet and and pet their visitors.
As usual our visit began in one of the larger lounges where the hounds patiently paused at each chair to say hello and receive much fuss. Some of the residents had interesting tales to tell of adventures with their own pets and of course, how much they missed them. Eventually, we made our way down the corridor to one of the smaller lounges where we were greeted by more happy faces eager to make contact with the hounds. We listened to more happy recollections before moving on to individual residents rooms where, with permission, the hounds make personal visits to say hello. This always goes down well and we know now which rooms will be expecting us to pop in and say hello while we're there.
Eventually, we moved upstairs to meet everyone there. Often quite a crowd gathers around us here as all the staff love our visits and getting to know a bit more about what we do. Before long it was time to say our goodbyes with promises of another visit next month.
In August we will be visiting both New Cross and Dovedale court in Wednesbury. Watch this space to read all about them!
Social Media Report.
Our social media pages have been regularly updated with hounds leaving us for new homes. We've had plenty leave us over the last few weeks, with photos being sent in shortly after by their new families of them settling quickly into their new homes. Most have been of the hounds sunbathing in their new gardens in the lovely weather!
We love to see your happy homed hounds so feel free to share them on our social media pages. Our Twitter is GTWolverhampton and our Facebook is Greyhound Trust Wolverhampton.
Please give us a follow to keep up to date with our day to day goings on, as well as photos from awareness events and our hounds leaving us.
We are pleased to let everyone know that we now have a third dog joining our supported hound scheme alongside existing boys Parker and Luigi.
Holly is a beautiful four year old white and black girl who was returned into our care when it was discovered that she had a problem with her thyroid that would require lifetime medication to keep under control. She was lucky enough to be reserved and then homed and has now left our kennels after her medication levels were sorted out by our vets. She will now be supported by the Branch in respect of the medication required to keep her healthy and so enjoy a happy retirement as a family pet in her new home.
Meanwhile Parker and Luigi continue to enjoy their lives as pampered pooches with Parker spending a couple of weeks in kennels recently while his family enjoyed a holiday break abroad. I'm sure he was more than ready to get back to his sofa again!
A reminder that our next GT Wolverhampton Branch Greyhound Walk is on Sunday 23rd September at Brindley Heath, Marquis Drive, Cannock Chase, WS12 4PW.
At Cannock there is a choice of three walks – one and a quarter or two and a quarter miles and a very short walk for those hounds who maybe can’t manage the longer ones but still enjoy a gentle stroll and a sniff or two!
After the walk there will be a raffle and the hounds can enjoy the usual sausages.
Please meet near the Brindley Heath Visitor Centre between 10 and 10.15am and the walk will begin at 10.30. Look out for the Greyhound Trust van which will be parked nearby.
Brindley Heath has a car park, toilets, a children’s play area and a café serving hot and cold drinks and snacks. If the weather is good there are plenty of places to have a picnic.
Not only are the Greyhound walks a social event – an opportunity to meet other greyhound owners – they help us to raise awareness about these wonderful hounds and the amazing pets they make.
Please join us - you will be very welcome!
Thats all for this month folks, please join us again next month for more news from the branch
