This week it's Festive Fish, an appeal for blankets and the new kennels....
GENERAL NEWS - The weather is getting a lot cooler now so we have lowered the ceiling in the kennels with a plastic false roof now in place. Lowering the high barn roof helps keep the warmth in and maintains the temperature in the kennels. We are also making sure that all the hounds have extra bedding to snuggle into but of course that means that our bedding store is quickly becoming severely depleted so if you are able to donate any blankets, quilts, sheets or old curtains we would be immensely thankful.
The autumn leaves are still falling so the cleaning of the paddock drains has been a regular job over the last few weeks. So many leaves!
We know that the move to new kennels is a hot topic of conversation and Head Office are still in negotiations for new kennels and are awaiting planning permission. You know that we will let everyone know where we are going to as soon as we are able to but in the meantime its business as usual at the existing kennels. We are lucky to be considered a great place to work and have lots of applications for job experience next year but unfortunately we cannot offer any places due to the proposed move to a new site.
We had a visit from Graeme Marsh from Head Office this week to check on the rebranding, as this has to be in place across all branches by 1 January 2018. We are working hard on this and are leading the way with regards to our trailer, van, signage and volunteers uniforms. The new branded leaflets are steadily replacing the old ones and the new volunteers sweatshirts and jackets are being ordered and should be available soon.
Now, the 'C' word. This year has really flown by and Christmas is rapidly approaching. We have stocks of beautiful greyhound Christmas cards and calendars (both slim and standard) available at the kennels for you to send to your family and friends. They will also available on the trailer at our Awareness Events. Time is running out so please buy these early to avoid disappoint as they usually sell quickly.
Are you wondering what to get someone for Christmas? What about something from our range of merchandise? You can support us and solve that present problem! Click here to go through to our merchandising page, have a browse and contact the kennels by email for more information or to place an order.
APPEALS - Yes, its back! Our famous 'Festive fish' campaign which we run every year is up and running again to give the hounds a delicious treat of oily fish mixed into their normal food. If you can bring along a few tins when you visit it would be much appreciated, and we have a nice big container ready to receive the donated tins. As always we thank you in advance for your generosity and we would love to beat last year's donations - let's see what you can do!
EVENTS THIS WEEK - On Friday we took Gordon to Aldridge Court Nursing Home. The event brought back loads of happy memories which started when we entered and Gordon remembered that Pebbles the resident’s pet rabbit lived in the front lounge, he was very excited.
It was nice that a number of the residents remembered Gordon by name and were really happy to see us. There were lots of smiling faces with many of the residents recalling stories of pets they had owed in the past. Lesley, the home’s coordinator, said that everyone was grateful for our visit and emphasised the benefit to the residents. Lesley thanked us for the visit and said she was looking forward to our next visit on the 8th of December.
On Saturday we took the Roadshow to Hilton Green where the Forest of Mercia organisation (who runs the Hilton Green) were holding its Winter Fete as part of the opening of the environmental education site. A number of volunteers went along with Blue, Gordon and Jamie to represent the Trust. The day got off to a wet start but once the gazebo was put up and the tombola set out the rain stopped and the sun made a welcome appearance. The event was really well attended with over twenty stalls there and this resulted in a lot of people taking an interest in what we are doing at the Trust. Over £69 was collected on the day but more importantly interest and awareness was raised with three separate people expressing a genuine interest in adopting one of our hounds. The event ended mid afternoon as soon as the temperature dropped and the light began to fade but it was agreed that the Roadshow's first visit to Hilton Green had been enjoyable and worthwhile.
UPCOMING EVENTS - This week it's Stafford Town Centre on 18th November where we be taking the trailer to the the Market Square from 9.00am till 4.00pm. The hounds would love to see you and our volunteers will be on hand to discuss what great pets they make and answer all your questions. Please pop along and see us, you will be made very welcome.
THIS WEEKS NEWBIES - The kennels are now full and all of the hounds are on the website. To see all of their little faces, click through to our website which is fully updated here.
HOUNDS HOMED THIS WEEK - Sweet girl Fiona kept her name this week as she left for her forever home with the Ellis family, Fraser is settling happily into family life with his new sisters Bridget and Holly and enjoys walks, Seamus has changed his name to Spud before leaving us for his new home in Stafford with the Poulson family, Bailey left us (keeping his name) as he joined the McDonald family in Wellington, Ollie kept his name as he left us for his forever home to live with Chris in Stafford and it was a wash and go for Bliss as she left to live with Dina, Chris and their hound Kudos in Bloxwich.
Although rehoming is down on last years figures, this seems to be the trend nationwide. Our extended opening hours (especially over the weekend) are still leading to afternoon visits which in turn result in more interest in our hounds for homing.
AND FINALLY....We will be holding this year's 'Volunteers Get Together' on Friday 1st December and as last year, there will be a buffet, awards, the now famous bottle raffle and then there is dancing the night away to the disco. Thanks to the sponsorship from the stadium this event is held as a thank you from us to the volunteers and the only cost involved is a contribution to the bottle raffle. We always have an enjoyable night!
That's it for this week, same time next week!
